Turf
Edward Dowden

The Smell O' the Turf: Verses
edited by Samuel S. McCurry & Edward Dowden
Dublin: Hodges, Figgis, & Co. Ltd, 1912

Thank God for simple, honest, close-knit turf,
Sound footing for plain feet; nor moss, nor mire;
No silvery quicksand, no hot sulphourous scruf
Flung from a turmoiled fire.

So far your hand has led me; what is worth
A question now of all the heavens conceal?
Here shall we lie, and better love the Earth,
And let the planets reel.
