A Churchman Speaks
George Buchanan

Poets From the North of Ireland
edited by Frank Ormsby
Belfast: The Blackstaff Press, 1979

'Cultivate monotony by repeated prayers.
Surrendering to that ennui, get strength.
The drone of sleepy hymns, the unoriginal
sermons serve a purpose. The Eternal
has seen enough of men to know by now
the nature of the case, may also suffer
a rather experienced boredom. We've little time
for saints and fanatics. Perhaps God too prefers
Christians who've cooled their zeal.'
