The Girl in The Lending Library
Patrick Kavanagh

The Complete Poems of Patrick Kavanagh
New York:  Kavanagh Hand Press, 1996

You leaned your head
Against the shelf
And I saw your sided eyes
Like the sword at Orion’s belt
In the south passionate skies.
And I said:

Under Orion I was born,
Viva la! for Nora Criona,
And not under Capricorn
Or fettered Andromeda.
You leaned your head
And the dust covers
Came to life, and the blurb
Told of starry lovers
Wonderful or superb.

Under Orion I was born
Viva la! for Nora Criona,
Taurus trembles hoof and horn,
Thus to see you.
