Night Faeries
James Browne

original composition
published online, 2002 at Faery Poetry

Just when my mother shuts the door,
Into my room they start to pour.

All those Faeries of the night.
I try to hide them from my sight.

But when I try to hide my head,
They take the covers from my bed,

And when I cry out for my mom,
They run and hide till she is gone,

Then they come from everywhere,
To pinch my cheeks and knot my hair,

And with the coming of the dawn,
Just seconds 'fore they are gone,

One comes and whispers in my ear,
In a tiny voice so pure and clear,

The words that give me such a fright,
"We'll be back again, tomorrow night!"
