This would not be the last effort to get such a petition going.
The earlier one, which I started, met some very curious opposition a few years back, and has been vanishing from the archives in an odd manner. (As has the other petition).

Begging your pardon for the mass crossposting, here, but these groups were
not chosen at random. With the exception of the ne groups, and the netloon
groups, these are some of groups that Fred has taken his NAMBLA crusade
into, and libeled people in.
If it was just a matter of Fred being an idiot, or even being a massively
crossposted idiot, there would be no reason to give him a second thought.
But Fred does more than that. Fred invents remarks, and sticks them into
people's mouths. He lies ouright, on a regular basis, and claims that
people who have openly opposed NAMBLA, are pedophiles who have been
arguing its cause. That is libel. That is not protected speech, even under
the US constitution. And it should not be tolerated.
Let us be rid of Mr. Cherry, for good. Sure, he has been chased off of
ISPs before. But he always manages to find a new one to jump over to. What
I am proposing is a petition, addressed to all ISPs in the Boston
metropolitan area, in particular, and all ISPs in general, that they
refuse Mr. Cherry's business so long as he persists in engaging in libel,
directed against those who have disagreed with him online. Given that his
pattern of doing so has been documented, over a period of years, they
should seriously consider refusing to do business with him, period. Let
any ISP that would consider his application, see what they will have to
look forward to answering for, should they take him on as a subscriber,
and let's see how many actually want to.
The followups are set to the groups for Fred's local area, the netkook
groups, and alt.bbs.allsysop, so potential ISPs will see them. Replies go
straight to Fred's postmaster.
Don't think of this as helping me, think of this as getting rid of Cherry,
once and for all, and helping everyone, yourself included.
So, if you would, please sign the petition below, and I will sign it
myself, after a certain number of signatures appear on it.

______________________________ We, the undersigned, are writing to call your attention to the abuses, not
merely of the net, but of the rights of his fellow net residents, by Fred
Cherry, and ask that you in no way facilitate the commission of further
abuses, by this man. We recognise and respect the right of each poster to
argue what he or she believes, even if we should find it absurd or
offensive, and we commend any ISP which stands up for its subscribers'
rights in this area, for its integrity and resolve. But Mr. Cherry has
exceeded his rights on numerous occasions, and gone beyond the mere
argument of a position, or expression of a sentiment. |

Waste of time, really. The sysop wasn't inclined to listen to reason, and
while many people loved to gripe about Cherry, going out on a
limb and actually try to do something about his online behavior was far more
than most of them were willing to do.
