On Bill Bennett
Most people have probably heard about Bill Bennett's recent faux pax. He made a statement on his radio show that one could reduce crime by killing all the "black babies". [note: link opens to a notoriously liberal media review site]
He then followed up by saying that such a thing would be reprehensible. As if that fig leaf would cover his sin.
It is statistically correct that adult blacks are more likely to be on the punishment end of our judicial system. One could then infer that blacks are therefore statistically more likely to commit crimes.
What those statistics leave out is that the end result of criminality is dependent on a whole host of things that have nothing to do with race. Poverty, education, upbringing, and individual decisions all have a bearing on whether or not one becomes a criminal.
Mr. Bennett's statement contains the assumption that the differential rates in crime between blacks and whites is explained by some sort genetics defect. His statement is reprehensible, repugnant, and wrong. He deserves all the scorn he is currently receiving.
