It is worth mentioning that generally there would not be as much ice in the ocean on August 1st. Barrow is on the west side of Point Barrow facing the Chukchi Sea, and no doubt was located there specifically because the prevailing winds are from the east, which normally keeps the ocean free of floating ice from the middle of July until October. However, occasionally a storm will be positioned such that Barrow gets a westerly wind for a few days, and this picture provides an example of the results!
