Hidden at the back is the umiaq with its skin still on. This picture gives a good idea of how the boats are stored when not in use. Upside down on a couple of barrels or cable spools. There are about 50 whaling crews in Barrow, hence there are several dozen umiaqs around town in various states of repair.

Which brings up an interesting point about these particular examples. They are not particularly good examples of umiaq frames! That's why they are where they are, rather than in a whaling captain's back yard being properly maintained. They do not particularly exhibit any great degree of quality when inspected close up; but they are functionally correct, and when viewed in the perspective this image gives, they are wonderful tourist attractions!
