Martin Luther, for example, inserted the word "alone" following the word "faith" in Romans 3 in an attempt to bolster his position. When called on this issue by a Greek scholar, Luther claimed authority to change this verse by saying "It is so because Dr. Martin Luther says that it is so." (!)
