v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

I cannot get the program to scan either a new disk scan, or a re-scan of a disk.  (New Files Added).  The program locks up, and says there is a problem with a particular file.  This file will either be in a directory, or one that is individual.  This has been occuring with both a CD, and a DVD disk.  There doesn't seem to be a work around this problem

The scanning works well in an earlier version of Boss.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Please send one of the files to mccaffjt@newsguy.com and I will try to reproduce the problem.

...The files scanned OK for me, so it is probably something to do with the file structure on the CD/DVD.

Is it possible to send me some detail about the directory layout?  Are there unusual directory names?  Are there empty directories?  How many directory levels?

Does a CD that scanned OK in the CD-Rom drive scan OK in your DVD/CD burner drive?

How big is the DATA.MDB file?  Could you ZIP it and send it to me?

Have you uninstalled MP3-Boss and then installed v0.586 (creating a NEW data directory)?

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

This problem has been traced to a problem with data tables during the upgrade (probably v0.583 upgrade).

You'll need to send me the problem DATA.MDB file (ZIP first!) if you want me to try to fix the problem.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Data Files "Old" and "New" have been submitted.  Latest Beta will not scan.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Paul -- are you saying that ONLY v0.586 beta scans (when created NEW) and v0.587 beta doesn't scan?  Could you give me more information about the v0.587 beta scanning problem?

I can see the problem tables in your upgraded DATA.MDB file (and am working to try to create a fix).  The NEW DATA.MDB file looks OK -- it doesn't look like there should be a scanning problem.

My current thinking is that the problem ONLY happens if a v0.57 DATA.MDB file was upgraded to v0.583/v0.584.  Upgrading directly to v0.585/v0.586/v0.587 looks like it should work OK.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

John.  The V570 works great.  That is the "Old" Data file I sent you.  V587 does not scan properly.  That is the "New" Data file I sent.  V587 will only scan a new file disk, and only from the CD-Rom Drive . Nothing will scan from the Burner drive.  On a re-scan (new files added), neither the CD-Rom Drive will scan, and (again) nothing from the Burner drive.

You said the "new" Data file looksOK.  Will it scan a new and/or a  file add disk?   Again, I have no problems before in this program, up to and including V570.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Both the 'old' dataset and 'new' DATA.MDB files you sent include the data tables I added in v0.583.

My understanding was that the 'old' dataset was
v0.57-->v0.58x updates-->v0.587 update

while the 'new' dataset was
v0.587 new installation (without upgrade).

Is this correct?

Exactly what happens when you scan?  I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem (as long as the DATA.MDB was NEVER upgraded to v0.582/v0.583/v0.584).

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

No.  When I use V570, I have no problems.  When I use V587, I can only scan a new disk (never scanned before) and then only from my CD-Rom Drive (D).  The V587 will not scan either on the CD-Rom (D) or the burner (E) when I add files to a previously scanned disk.  I get an error message that the expression I click on is an invalid expression, blah, blah, (you know the message).  It also says I cannot add files, and points to a particular file.  This file could be different each time.

You said you are not having any problem with the file I sent.  Do you try a re-scan (adding new files), and can you do this from different drives?
You also stated that you had found a problem in one of the Data files I sent you.  Can you send me the file that you say you have no problem with.  Also, I have done a complete uninstall of any MP3 Boss files, and did a complete Install of V587, and nothing helps.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Paul,

Thanks for the detailed information...I'll continue looking at the problem and see what I can find.  I don't understand what could be different when scanning the burner (E) if you are using a newly created DATA.MDB file.

Do you have any problems with scanning the hard drive?

For sure I should be able to set things back such that MP3-Boss doesn't check if a CD was previously scanned (right now that setting still does some checking...).

I have no problems scanning the hard drive.  I tried to get the program to mess up, and could not.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

New & Interesting proble.  I tried to play a disk (file) that was already scanned.  Thw file started in Winamp, but the program also tried scanning the data again.  The message at the bottom read that the Cd-Rom was already fingerprinted, and Volume was already in Data Base.  There was no control over Winamp (could not stop, or adjust voleme, and had to ab overide to get out of program completly.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

It sounds like maybe MP3-Boss thought that the file couldn't be found, and so it searched your other CD to see if it could find the file?  Do you have SmartSearch enabled?

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

The v0.587 beta adds the ability to use any of your CD drives when playing back a file...if you have multiple CD/DVD drives and enable Smartsearch.  If MP3-Boss doesn't find the song on the drive where it was scanned, it will check the other CD/DVD drives before saying the file can't be found.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

I still don't know what is Smartsearch, and if it is available on a system. how do you turn it off?

Of course this is all moot, as the scanning still does not work properly.  Are there any other users having this trouble?

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

SmartSearch is a checkbox on the "More" tab of Configuration.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

I haven't had any other reports of scanning problems...but perhaps other people don't have multiple CD/DVD drives (or maybe the issue occurs when you read disks that aren't finalized).

What information do you see from Utilities/Review/Drive Volumes?  Do you get errors?

None what so ever. Only scanning problems when cataloging new or re-read disks.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

I still haven't been able to reproduce the scanning problem on my CD and DVD drives.

Do you ONLY see the problem with rewriteable disks?  Do you ever see the problem with a finalized disk?

Anybody else seeing CD/DVD scanning problems???

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Occurs on finalized. re-writes, new scan, re-scann.  Does not occur with any directories on hard drive.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Let me know if v0.588 helps -- be sure you use "Utilities/Misc/Refresh CD-Drive" to update the information in the CD Drive tables.

I still haven't been able to get the problem to happen on my system.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

I can use the new V588, ONLY if I create info, using a new Data.MDE.  It will scan OK from the CD-Rom, but will still not scan from the Burner drive.  Of course this doesn't help me in using my data file with 80,000 files.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Paul,

In theory, as long as you use "Utilities/Misc/Refresh CD/DVD" -- even your datafile with 80K files should work.  Let me know.

Re: v0.58x Beta Scanning Problems

Paul,

Have you tried it now with beta v0.589?

That beta reconstructs all the CD drive tables, and also rebuilds the CD information in the Volumes table.
