network

Hello

my mp3 collection gets bigger and bigger and my pc gets slowlier an slowlier handling this.

Ist it useful to install mp3boss on a faster pc and handle the collection over a network?

And where should I save my *.md files?

Re: network

What type of computer are you using, and what type of network?

Local storage will be fastest -- the network access won't be as fast as a local drive.

How slow are things going?  MP3-Boss should be able to handle very large collections without slowing down significantly (other than maybe the initial load of a very large database).  I have a lot of my files on a USB drive, and find that performance is still pretty good.

Have you tried to compact the database?
Use Start/Programs/MP3Boss/Optimize Data and Optimize Database (do this BEFORE loading MP3-Boss).

The *.md? files are all stored in your local MP3Boss directory.

Re: network

P4 1800 mhz 256 mb Ram
Windoed XP
Perhaps the problem are 256mb RAM.

Now I have a newer laptop. I want to listen and rate the mp3s with the laptop. But I can`t save all my mp3s on the laptop, so I have to storage them on the P41800.
Good idea?

Re: network

I'm surprised that you'd see slow performance on a 1.8GHz/256MB RAM computer.  Until about a year ago, I was running on a 600MHz/256MB computer without any speed problems.  How slow is it?  What operations are slow?

No problem storing the files on the desktop computer -- the database is stored locally, so that isn't a problem.  As long as you have a reasonable network, streaming your mp3 files for playing won't be a problem.  Another option (that I use) is to add one of those huge USB drives -- I've seen them for $99/250MB or $250/500MB.  As long as the laptop has USB 2.0 -- they are easily fast enough (USB 1.0 is a bit too slow).  The advantage is that you get to keep a second copy of the mp3 files (in case the P41800 drive goes down).

Re: network

I think it is Winamp.

When I want to listen to all songs, I have to put all songs into the playlist, I think.
This process takes a long time with mp3 boss. So I put the songs from the winamp library in the playlist.
And Winamp gets very slow when all mp3s are in the playlist and in library too.

Maybe I have just a bad way to hear all of my mp3s, how do you do this?

Re: network

OK -- now I understand.

If you really want ALL the songs in the database in the playlist, while it takes a long time to load those files...you should be able to start playing as soon as the songs start loading (right?).

At least as of Winamp v5.32, Winamp can only load about 65K songs in the playlist, so that is something of a limit.

I've always used Mp3-Boss to control the library (instead of Winamp) -- it sounds like the Winamp Library is the main reason for the slowdown?

Instead of loading all the songs at once -- you could first use MP3-Boss to filter the list, for instance, all the songs by the Beatles -- and then load all of those songs.

Perhaps I should add the ability to load one song at a time into Winamp, having Mp3-Boss completely control the songs that are played?

Question for everyone -- how do YOU use Winamp to control the playlist?  Do you use the Winamp Library in addition to the Mp3-Boss list?  Should I add single-song control to MP3-Boss?

Re: network

A shuffle play option for the mp3list would be cool with the ability to load one song at a time into Winamp - right I think thatīs it what my poor P4 want.

Anyone else think I should add this soon?
