MP3 Scanning bug??

The best way to describe what is going on is to give you a step by step:

1. I open MP3 Boss, and select "MP3 Scanner"
2. I have 9 directories listed, but only check 1 [R&B folder]

[settings]
    Scan Type:Refresh
Review New Drive: After directory scan
Review Directory Categories after directories are scanned: Checked
    Add new files ONLY: Checked
    File Size check: Checked

3. I then click "Scan Selected Directories"

[Directory Review Pops up]
at the bottom it says "Record 1 of 1: (Filtered)". I do not see any songs, just the folder "R&B"

4. I then click "Done", and a window pops up and says, "Completed Processing 14 files"

The problem is, I have not added any new songs. I get the above EVERY time I scan that folder. When I go to the "MP3 List" , all looks normal in that folder, and I can't tell what 14 files it is trying to process every time.

Thanks for your help.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

more info on above problem:
when I scan the "R&B" folder, I get  TOTAL SONGS FOUND: 415. BUT, looking at the "MP3 list" and filtering using the category "R&B", it says I have 419 songs. I verified using windows explorer, and I have a total of 419 in that folder.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Could you send me a screen capture of the Scanning dialog after scanning is complete?

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

It's part of SpamHippo through Newsguy -- here's why I need it:

Spam & Virus Stats for the Year so far:
Total number of messages          31334
Total number of spam messages 30049
Total number of viruses                  188
Spam and viruses as % of all email 96%

If you are interested, take a look at  Newsguy.  If you do signup, mention my email (mccaffjt@newsguy.com) and I'll get some signup credit.

I use Newsguy as a second email account, for newsgroups (30GB/month), additional website space (180MB), PHP/SQL for this forum (40MB), and also use it to filter mail that goes to the mp3-boss.com domain (which gets hit with spam like crazy).  All that...for only about $80/year.

Plus...the people running Newsguy seem to be a lot like me running MP3-Boss...a bit crazy to do so much work for so little monetary return! smile

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

John, any ideas?

Is there a way for me to find out which 14 songs it is trying to add every time? If I knew that, I might be able to figure out what the problem is with my mp3's as to how they are tricking mp3boss into thinking they are new files to be added when scanned.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

I've been trying to figure out what might be happening, but so far I haven't had any luck.  Normally a "Skipped" or "Too short" button should appear when this happens.

A few things to look at:
1) Are any of the files very short (<256KB)?
2) Is it possible that some of the files with an mp3 extension (or other song-file extensions) aren't really mp3 files?
3) Any completely corrupted files (have you done a chkdsk)?

Do you see any filenames go by during the scan process that would lead you to a few of the files -- if you do, please send them to me so that I can scan them here.

Thanks,
John

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

I found the problem.
I located all the mp3's that were giving me issues. Nothing wrong with them, but I removed them from the "R&B" folder, and when doing a scan, I was still getting a wrong number of total songs found, but NO new songs to add, so half the problem solved.

Long story short, I did a new data base and wiped out the old one, and it all works correctly now. The only thing I am missing is my SONG RANKINGS and NUMBER OF TIMES PLAYED stats.

Keep in mind, that my data base has been with me for quite some time, and on different computers, with different processors (AMD/INTEL). I upgrade and restore OS backups a lot too. It probably just got corrupted somehow over time.

It is working beautiful now. Thanks for your help.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Thanks for the information...I didn't think of that...

Did you try:
Start/MP3 Boss/Optimize Data
and
Start/MP3 Boss/Optimize Database

...to see if that would repair the database?
If you saved a copy of DATA.MDB, you might try this.

What I should do is store the Rankings and Times Played in an id3v2 field so that you could get that info back even if you wipe the database.  One of the standard fields is "popularimeter" -- but I think that is based on 100% (should I just set it based on 20% increments?).  I'm not sure there is a "TimesPlayed" field -- so maybe I'd have to create a custom field.  Think both should be custom fields?

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

I did save a copy of the DATA.MDB. But I can't find "Start/MP3 Boss/Optimize Data". Could you give me a little more instruction?

THAT is a GREAT IDEA!!! to save the "Rankings" and "Times Played" in the id3v2 tag, or even a seperate data base??? MP3 Boss does a MD5 Check right? The MD5 could be stored and matched to Rankings, Times Played, and much more info.

I like that if it's not to much work on your end.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Start meaning the "Windows Start" button in the lower left corner of your display -- I should have written this as:

Start/All Programs/MP3Boss/Optimize Data
Start/All Programs/MP3Boss/Optimize Database

Make sure that Mp3-Boss isn't open when you call these up -- they need exclusive access to the database.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Update: Tried both Optimize options, and no go. Still have 14 new songs on every scan.

I'm just going to do a NEW database and start over. I need to listen to some of those old songs again anyhow. ..lol

Thanks a lot for your help

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Please send me the database (ZIPPED) so I can take a look.  Maybe I can figure out what went wrong.

I might be able to output the useful ratings information.

Also...are you going to re-scan with the latest beta?  I'd really like some feedback on how things are working with WMA, OGG, FLAC, SHN...

Thanks!

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

data base sent.

I can't give you much feed back, because ALL my songs are mp3's. And I am having problems running the latest beta, so I am still using the v6.16

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

You are all set with the v0.6172 beta, correct?  Everything still scanning OK?

I've found out that I will skip apparently good files...if they have unicode filenames.  This is why files like:
Eluveitie - Vęn - 06 - Jzag.mp3

...aren't scanned.  However, MP3-Boss reports the problem as a bad filename (skipped).  At very least, the next release will scan the file by using a short filename.

Re: MP3 Scanning bug??

Yes sir, all is good here.

I did receive your email about my old data base. So, after making a new one, everything is working great.
