v0.640 Beta Release

See the next message for a description of all that is new in v0.638.  The biggest improvement is that it is MUCH faster at scanning more than 5K - 10K files.

I'd like to make v0.640 the official version soon -- so it would be great if you could give me feedback as soon as possible.  As with all initial beta releases, please be sure to backup your current MP3-Boss installation before installing the beta.

Full install:
web.newsguy.com/mccaffjt/beta/mp3boss.zip
web.newsguy.com/mccaffjt/beta/mp3.exe

Update install:
web.newsguy.com/mccaffjt/beta/mp3update.zip
web.newsguy.com/mccaffjt/beta/mp3update.exe

Please let me know if you find any problems with the beta.  Thanks!

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Hi

I have tried running 0.639 but it just keeps popping up a warning that it needs to update the table structure about 7 times . When I get past those it doesn nothing and I can't find an executable to manually perform the upgrade in the MP3 Boss directory.

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Is this a new install or upgrade?  The errors sounds like a bad installation -- did you get any error messages during the installation?

I just updated the 'backup copy' of the primary data table on the web server -- it is possible that every time mp3-boss downloaded a copy of that file, it detected that it was old...and that caused the problem.  However, that doesn't explain why I didn't see the problem here.

Do you every see the Update program?

What operating system?

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

I have the same problem on Vista.
I made a full install.

Mp3-boss was working with the original data.mdb.
Then i copied the data.mdb from vers. 0.637 to 0.639 and updated the data.mdb to version 1.1, but I also got the error message: the structure of your data tables ...

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Does the update program ever appear for you?  Does it work after it is updated?

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

I think I used the update table in version 0.638. It worked.
When I use the update table in version 0.639 it does not work.

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Do you have an UPDATE.MDE in your mp3boss directory?

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

When v0.639 tries to run the UPDATE, it creates a file named:
mp3-boss-auto-update.txt

Please send me that file, and also send me your UPDATE.MDE file (ZIPPED).

Thanks,

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

The last line of the

is something like:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files \Sagekey Software\StartAccess_97.exe" -value="Update" -wait=20000 -normal -cmd="SOFTWARE\OPAL Network\MP3Boss"
(all on a single line).

It looks like there is an extra character right before \Sageky.

Click the Windows Start/Run... and then enter that line...except get rid of the 'blank' character between Files and \Sagekey.

...so the correct line is something like:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sagekey Software\StartAccess_97.exe" -value="Update" -wait=20000 -normal -cmd="SOFTWARE\OPAL Network\MP3Boss"

Let me know if UPDATE starts correctly then.

I've made this simple change to v0.640, and updated the files -- I'm uploading the new files now (you get the updated files if you click the v0.639beta links).

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Hello, the MP3-boss update programm was running.
It didnīt made a update cause it said:  "no update necessary", because my programm is already in format 1.1.
I updatet when I installed ver. 0639.

Is it a problem to use several installed mp3boss? - ver. 0637, ver. 0638. ver. 0639. Perhaps this is a confusion for the update programm.

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

You should be able to use multiple versions of MP3-Boss (although hopefully there really isn't any reason too!).

The latest version should have told you if you needed to install the full version (earlier versions updates weren't VISTA-compatible).

Once you ran the UPDATE program -- did v0.639 then run for you?

Please send me your mp3boss.log so I can see what else might be going wrong.

What I need to understand is why both the full install and update are running OK for me.

Does v0.639/v0.640 run OK for anyone?

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

heureka, the update programm started automatically, when mp3 boss started and made a succesfull update of the data.mdb.
Now itīs runnign

At first Iīm very glad: the shortcut "alt-n" is exactly that what I want.
There is only one thing: the "registered now-playing-song" is the wrong one. The right one is in list view 21 lines under the showed song.

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Hi John,

Long time no speak

Now running dual boot xp pro and xp media centre on separate drives. (Tried Vista but not convinced as yet). I have been upgrading constantly since 57 and 639 (so far) has been the best and quickest to scan my 15000 files since 57. As I don't use all of the available features I just scan my entire music from scratch. 639 installed without any problems, scanned quickly and correctly and is now running as normal.
Many thanks

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Glad to hear that v0.639/v0.640 is looking better.

I know for me...it is by far the fastest yet...especially for really huge collections.  Plus, you no longer have to worry about finishing the scan in one session -- you can stop/restart whenever you want.

The new version is so much faster, that I even added MP4, WMA and OGG as default scan types (on top of MP3).

As far as the Winamp playlist problem -- Check what version(s) of Winamp you are running.  MP3-Boss is going to try to run the version specified in the MP3-Boss configuration.  If a different version (another directory) is already running, it will still assume the directory specified in the configuration.  This means it is looking at a playlist that isn't the same as the playlist you are listening to.

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

Hi John,

Haven't run 640 yet so can't comment, but not sure why the winamp comment appeared in reply. Is this for somebody else? as I don't have a problem with the playlist

Re: v0.640 Beta Release

The Winamp comment was for HaraldF -- the prior message.  Probably should have broken up this thread into multiple messages, but too lazy!

The v0.640 release is essentially identical to v0.639 -- all it does is strip off a null if it is returned when reading the common files location from the registry (a problem on some computers if they need to run Update).
