Trouble with Auto Rename and other issues

Hey,

Ok here's the scoop, I have spent all day working with your program, for the most part it is impressive.

I am having a problem when searching for duplicate files it only wants to delete One of the three or four at a time if there are more than one dup.
So I went to the drive and deleted them my self, but the data base has no way of verifying without a new scan 5 hours in my case.

When you remove dups does it erase them from the drive 'it should" or just the database. Some of the dups were fakes just empty audio with different names. So when I deleted them from the drive manualy they stayed in the data base and showed up again in the dups list. I ran the scan with new unchecked and that cured that problem but a simple verifiy button to checkthe database for orphans would be a lot easier.

Also the rename is giving me a hassle " I wanted to get rid of track numbers so the alpha sort would be accurate" but it returns these errors

"The expression On Click you entered as the event property setting produced the following error:.
*The expression may not result in the name of a macro, the name of a user-defined function, or {Event Procedure}.
*There may have been an error evaluating the function, event, or macro.

and another one if I click cancel

Unable to close the AutoMove/AutoRename dialog while setting up the file lists. Please wait, or click CANCEL to cancel the operaiton.

I waited two hours for anything to happen

The first pass - filling table never goes any further than 9 spots after the error message and the curser returns to an arrow instead of an hour glass although the
cpu usage stays at 94%.

if I click cancel it responds with another error box listed above. Or am I just not waiting long enough for it to rename 3000 files.
There is slightly more than 20,000 files total, but only 3000 or so have track numbers.
However the AutoRename File list shows them as fixed, so once again how do I get the main list to update. If the names are not changed on the drives it will just go back to haveing the track numbers again

So the question remains will the list update itself or how once the files are renamed, how do you verify and get a new list. or are the files just renamed in the list and not on the drive. I need the files renamed on the drives. Once and if they are renamed on the drive is there a way for the database to check for renames or would that be considered 'New" files so that it does not have to be overwritten but just refreshed?

I am an IT Administrator but have no idea exactly how you laid out your functions.

Re: Trouble with Auto Rename and other issues

I'll try to answer your questions...thanks for trying out MP3-Boss, and thanks for letting me know about problems that you see!

>when searching for duplicate files it only wants to delete 1 of the 3 or 4...
I directly compare 2 files at a time, and the default layout shows the 2 duplicate files per row.  However, if there are 4 exact duplicates you would see 2 rows of 2 files.  Only when there is an odd number of duplicates will you have to run the duplicate scan twice to delete all duplicates.  Perhaps the problem was that you wanted to delete 'almost exact' duplicates -- if that is the case, just uncheck the box 'Show exact duplicates ONLY'.

The Datasheet/1-File view lets you sort and filter the list -- this makes it pretty easy to locate similar files to delete.  During my testing just now, I found that I haven't enabled sort/filter for the other 2 views -- I'll add this in an upcoming rev.

You might also want to look at the Datasheet/1-File view -- this allows you to see each duplicate file on a separate row -- and usually this means it is easy to see when you have lots of the identical file.

>when you remove dups does it erase them...
At the bottom of the 'View/Process Duplicates' Form, you'll see an Action combo-box.  The combo-box lets you select 'delete immediately', 'Move to Recycle Bin', 'Move to Drive/Directory', or 'Move to Directory'.

>Orphan check
Utilities/Cleanup/Records -- will automatically remove those records that don't point to files.

>Expression On Click errors
Please send me your MP3Boss.Log file and I'll take a look.  Did it seem like a specific filename was the problem?  A specific drive?  Or it was happening on all files?  Which version of MP3-Boss?

I should have more suggestions once I see the mp3boss.log file, since it sounds like there is a problem that means the list is never completed.

When autorename works, you can see a full list of before/after filenames before you click OK to rename the files.  Also, you can Undo the rename operation.

MP3-Boss will autorename the files on the drive and also in List View.

If you are only renaming the files, the process is very fast and List View is updated immediately.  If you move files to another drive as part of the Move/Rename process, then MP3-Boss caches the information and slowly updates the List View information (as the files are copied/moved across drives).

Hope this answers most of your questions.  Please send me the mp3boss.log -- I'd like to see what is going on with Autorename.

Thanks!

Re: Trouble with Auto Rename and other issues

Hey thanks for the quick responce.......Before I read your responce I tried the auto rename again and it got to the 4th pass before it quit and now if I click Cancel it says "Unable to close the AutoMove/AutoRename dialog while setting up the file lists. Please wait, or click CANCEL to cancel the operation. If I click Cancel it just stays there. If I click OK it starts the rename sequence again. Unitl I click .............I just tried to repeat the sequence and it came up with a new screen that said it was going to rename the files but at the bottom it says "AutoMove/AutoRename cancelled"  I will now try to find the log........Can you send me a hint? I also signed up for notificaton and the foram did not send me an email message that there was a responce. Ok let me see if I can find the log file, is it in the program.

I just looked everywhere in the program and searched the drives for mp3boss.log and  if you want it here OK. I'll send it in email too.

Re: Trouble with Auto Rename and other issues

The problem was traced to trying to rename 2500 files at a time -- 2200 at once worked OK.

Not sure why it would be limited to only 2500 files at a time -- the rename (and move) are table-based -- so they should certainly support at least 100K files (and 250K shouldn't be a problem).  I've probably only moved/renamed a few thousand files at a time...but I'd be surprised if other customers haven't moved/renamed tens of thousands.

The computer in use was a bit old, but because Mp3-Boss primarily uses Access tables instead of trying to load everything into local memory -- it tends to work pretty well even on older computers.

I'll add more error logging in rename in the next release.

Anyone else seeing this problem?
