MP3-Boss Scan Times

How long is MP3-Boss scanning taking on your computer?  Are you getting errors during the scan?

Audio fingerprinting definitely slows down the process a lot -- but it depends on how many of your songs have embedded tags.

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

John
using version 608.
clean install with about 13000 files to scan on a separate hard drive
the scanning progress didn't move for 20 minutes so stopped and restarted.
asked for 1 directory with 10 files to be scanned (turned off enable musicDNS and save embedded pictures). 10 minutes later with only 4/5 blocks appearring in the scan process  I aborted scan.

607 took a very long time to scan (compared to earlier versions) but this seems even slower.

Will check again with different configurations but at the moment a complete scan is far too long.

Much easier for me to load an earlier version and then install 608 on top

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

Do you have Audio Fingerprinting enabled?  Is that where the slowdown happens?  How about if you turn off Audio Fingerprinting (then you should be back to the original scan speed).

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

Hi John

Still doesn't work for me.

working offline, I cloned a fresh copy of Xp and installed 608. On the configuration page I removed the tick from Enable MusicDNS and then asked Mp3Boss to scan my music directory.

it did the normal checks and then got to the bit where it says Processing directory. Internet Connection then tried to kick in so i stopped that but no progress on scanning.

Restarted, checked the scanning configuration ( no tick in the EnableDNS feature) and tried to scan just 1 directory. Same result i.e no apparent progress on scanning.

Started again and asked to scan a different music directory where I have a few unsorted and some copies. After 10 minutes or so the scanning bar shows about 5 blocks.

Cancelled everythng and recloned XP, installed v 0.57 and scanned 13,500 files in 36 minutes.

This particulary computer is pretty old now, AMD 2500, 1.84 processor 1GB mem and 160 hard disk 3/4 full

Does Mp3boss v 60x scan if you are off line and what settings can/should be changed to quicken up scanning?

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

On a fast computer, audio fingerprinting requires 5-10s per song -- so it IS very slow.  Not too much can be done to speed that up, since it is very calculation intensive.  However, about half the songs I've scanned find artist/title information.

I'll have to check and make sure that I don't do the fingerprint when the MusicDNS is unchecked.  Also, maybe I shouldn't do the MusicDNS lookup if the 'guessed' artist is already in the artists table.

The other new feature that might slow things down (as of v0.607) is the Artist Lookup feature -- the program does "sounds-like" searching and then queries a 17K table of artists if the initial guess for the artist isn't in the table.  Perhaps I should allow this to be turned off?

Here I've found that scanning is probably 5x slower on average, but MUCH more accurate -- since even untagged/misnamed files often give me good results.

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

John,

Thanks for the info.
Fully understand the need for better scanning, but not too relevant for my needs as my 13500 files are sorted okay.

Great Program, hope it survives under Vista!

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

I'll definitely take a look at what I can do about scan speed -- even if it means being able to turn off lookup features.

This last version really surprised me...I sped up 2 features (duplicate verification & Playlist reports) by about 10x each...didn't think I would ever be able to see such speed improvements!

Glad you still like the program after all this time...don't be shy about sending me a few more customers!

If things look good, I plan to upgrade MP3-Boss to Access2007 -- it is supposed to be "only" about 30-50MB runtime (which no longer seems so huge compared to other programs out there).

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

Have you scanned again with the v0.6202 release?  Times & results better?

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

I found another reason for slower scanning with the new versions.

If you are scanning across the network, it looks like the MD5 calculation can significantly slow down the scan.

Adding just the MD5 calculation on a computer that scans around 3 files/second (across the network, without MD5) slows the scan rate to 3-5s per file (so up to 15 times slower!).

It looks like I should be able to speed this up by using an alternative MD5 routine.

If I can't figure out a good way to speed this up, I'll make the MD5 ON/OFF configurable with the next release.

Re: MP3-Boss Scan Times

I had another report about slow scanning speed, this time with v0.681.  I've been able to see it here as well -- if the hard drive is fragmented, the MD5 scanning slows things down -- MP3-Boss reads a lot of data when scanning.
