Rating songs

Whats the best way to rate and categorize songs while working?

Is it difficult to make a toolbar with songname, rating and usercategory and to handle this toolbar with shortcuts?

Is there a way to make rating in Mp3boss compatible to rating with winamp or Windows Explorer?

Re: Rating songs

Good questions!

I've thought about doing both things...but never got around to it.  I've taken a look at the Winamp media library "specs" and it should be possible to retrieve that information.  I don't see any ratings in Windows Explorer -- do you mean Windows Media Player?

Is there a Winamp plugin that is specifically for rating songs?  Maybe I could read that...

I've also thought about adding an IR interface ... so you could rate the songs from across the room.  Or...are there any mp3 players that let you rate songs while they are playing?  I could then read those ratings.  Unfortunately, my player doesn't allow me to rate songs.

Are you aware that there are keyboard shortcuts for rating?
Alt-0 = Unknown
Alt-1 = Awful
Alt-2 = Bad
Alt-3 = Just OK
Alt-4 = Next to best
Alt-5 = Best

When I rate a lot of songs, I usually use do the following:
Filter based on artist, and then play that bunch of songs...because I know I'll like most of these songs...and then I use HotScan so I can rate them quickly.

I'm interested in learning how other people use MP3-Boss to rate songs ... so I can make MP3-Boss better.

Re: Rating songs

Hello

In Vista Explorer there is a rating column and I think, itīs compatible to the wmediaplayer.

Mp3 players like the Ipod have a rating function.
Software mp3players like Itunes have them too.

You have the better way to rate songs.
When I want to rate my songs, I donīt want to spend an extra time for this, I would like to rate songs, when I use my pc for work or other things and listen to the songs.
I try to fill up the columns
year, rating, usercategory, artist, title, glitch, live, radio
But at the moment I canīt rate songs next to work, because it takes to much time switching the windows, put in the information and switching back, and thatīs not good for my Workflow.
So I would be glad to have a toolbar where I can put in this Informations and use them with global hotkeys (like play/stop/next... in winamp) without using the mouse.

What do you mean with IR Inteface? Rating with a IR remote controller? Would be great.

I know the keyboard shortcuts, thank you!

Itīs quite difficult to make mp3boss better, cause it is already so good.
Your service ist great

Have a nice day
Harald

Re: Rating songs

Harald,

Are there any Winamp toolbar plugins out there that have the source -- so I could modify them to add the MP3-Boss ratings feature?

Or anyone want to write something?  It would be easy for Mp3-Boss to simply read a CSV file generated by the plugin...

Re: Rating songs

I still havenīt found a plugin.

Is it possible to give the "find"-button in the list view a shortcut?
After pressing the hotkey the cursor should be in the first column of the list view.

Re: Rating songs

Do you mean you want to have a single shortcut instead of Alt-EF to bring up the Find dialog?

Or you need it to go to a specific column?  Since you can move columns around...I'm not sure how easy/useful it is to go to a specific column with a shortcut key?

Re: Rating songs

Harald,

I'm not sure I understand -- do you just need to move all the way to the left?  Or do you need to select the entire row (small triangle in the record selector, all the way to the left)?

If you want to move to the first field in the current row (using the keyboard), you can use:
HOME (if the current field is completely highlighted)
or
HOME, Left-Arrow, HOME (if the entire field isn't highlighted)

Is this for viewing or editing?

Re: Rating songs

This is for editing.

For example:
I write this message in Internet Explorer and hear music with mp3-boss and winamp.
I want to make a list entry (in list view) about the song that I hear now.

So I have to go to the mp3-boss window - by mouse or hotkey (Win+TAB)
For edition I have to go to the cell in list view - by mouse.
Which hotkey can I use for this?

I want go back to the message in Internet Explorer - by mouse or hotkey (Win + TAB).
I write on this message until I hear the next song I want to edit too.
I go to mp3-boss window ... . . .. .

When I use hotkeys instead of mouse I will be faster.

Re: Rating songs

Harald,

I've added shortcuts to FIND (Alt-N) and Detail (Alt-I) in v0.639.

So...Now an Alt-N-I would do the following:
Find (finds/selects the song that is playing)
Detail (pops up a dialog for the currently selected song)

...will that do what you want?

Suggestions welcome!

Re: Rating songs

After pressing the shortcut Alt-N, is it possible to walk through the columns pressing tabulator?

Then exact the shortcut will do what do I want.

Happy New Year!

Re: Rating songs

In v0.639, I've changed Find so that it does a setfocus to List View -- so clicking Find (or Alt-N) will let you tab through the columns.
