v0.676 Beta Release

NOTE: This is an EARLY beta.  Please be sure that you make a copy of your current MP3-Boss directory before installing the new revision.  I'm making this public now so that I can get more feedback on any bugs.  I'd recommend you stay with the current v0.672 release unless you like to play with new beta revisions of software.  THANKS!

This version is the first public BETA that includes ZIP and CDG support.  This adds a number of new tables and fields ... so the new DATA.MDB is NOT compatible after the update.  Please be sure to SAVE a copy of your DATA.MDB before you update!

This version does additional checking to match the artist against the 17K artist table.  Let me know if you find some common artists that aren't in the artist table.  As long as the artist is in the table, there is an excellent chance that the correct artist is identified.

The new revision also appears to fix some problems with installation under VISTA (that might have resulted in a missing INSTALL.LOG that is needed to uninstall), fixes the problem some users have seen when loading Utilities, fixes a  problem with Drive "Refresh Mapping", and allows turning off MD5 checksums so that scanning (even over a network) is as fast as early versions of Mp3-Boss.  I've also cleaned up the scan routines a bit ... preparing for conversion to Access2007.

There are a few known problems:
1) Even though the INSTALL.LOG is created (which is used to uninstall), the correct desktop link is not created ... which means that uninstalling will be more difficult.  I expect to fix this problem shortly.
To uninstall, just use Start/Run with the following command line:
"C:\Program Files\OPAL Network\MP3Boss\Uninstall.exe" INSTALL.LOG
(note that this assumes that you installed mp3boss in the directory
"C:\Program Files\OPAL Network\MP3Boss\")

2) Scanning ZIP files might not add the found mp3 files to the database the first time through (you'd need to scan twice).  In addition, if that happens, you might find that while the ZIP files are moved to another directory, the ZIP filename information isn't stored in the database.  When this happens, you'll probably see an 'Unable to rename' error in the mp3boss.log.

3) You may see an error about 'requires update' after starting the program the first time.  You should ignore this error (unable to locate datalink.mdb).  This will be corrected once the new revision becomes official.  You should download and unzip DATALINK.ZIP into your installation directory to eliminate this problem.  Letting the normal update proceed will link to the old data format.

Full install:
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/mp3.exe
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/mp3boss.zip

Upgrade:
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/mp3update.exe
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/mp3update.zip

Datalink:
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/datalink.zip
(if you download and unzip this into your install directory before running MP3-Boss, it will probably get rid of that update error message)

Questions:
Should the default setting include scan for ZIP & CDG?
Should the default setting turn off MD5 scanning over the network?  While I'm not doing a lot with the MD5 now ... at some point I plan to use it to do a verification check against file corruption.  Also, it could be used to help recover a partially scrambled drive ... since often just the filename is lost.
Have I forgotten to include anything?  At one point when I was working on this, I was getting a lot of suggestions ... and so some of those suggestions might have been lost.  Please let me know!

Please let me know what you find -- both good & bad!  Thanks for your help!

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Please let me know if you try out the beta ... and if you find any problems.

If possible, I'd like to create a new public release in January.

Thanks!

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Hello John,

I think the copy down function does not work.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

I've verified the problem and will fix it shortly.

I have one report that every startup is asking for an update because of a problem with datalink.mdb.  Are you seeing that problem?  I haven't been able to duplicate the problem yet.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

I get the message:

Some files are required. Download now?

If I click ok, I get the message:
"Succesfully setup the required datalink.mdb file. Your files have been updated."

If I click cancel, I get the message:
"Unable to locate/setup the required datalink.mdb file. If this continues, you should contact ..."

When I restart mp3-boss, I get the same message again.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Did you download and unzip:
http://www.mp3-boss.com/BETA/datalink.zip

into the same directory as the DATA.MDB file?

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

I've figured out the CopyDown problem -- and should be able to create a new version tomorrow.

Looking at the code, it looks like the datalink.mdb update should occur only when the datalink.mdb file can't be found in the same directory as the MPEG.MDE file.  Can you verify that there is a datalink.mdb file is present in the same directory as MPEG.MDE.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

I have a datalink_backup.mdb in the same directory, I have renamed it to datalink.mdb, started mp3-boss and got the same message again.

mp3-boss renames datalink.mdb back to datalink_backup.mdb.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Thanks for that info -- hopefully that will help me track down the problem.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Can you send me the DATALINK.MDB and DATALINK_BACKUP.MDB files?

I've added additional error logging in the next version, but still don't see the problem.

I've fixed a problem with the icons being shown instead of the thumbnails, and fixed CopyDown.

Re: v0.676 Beta Release

Thanks -- I believe I've figured out the problem.

Other fixes: updates the path for ZIPs that include embedded full-paths.
