Surprisingly, not too many MP3-Boss customers have expressed an interest in Napster-type music sharing...but I thought you'd be interested in LimeWire.

I've been having a lot of trouble with WinMX lately...it still finds files, but rarely if ever completes the downloads.

My searches showed that LimeWire, BitTorrent and Ares Lite were the top contenders to replace WinMX.

I haven't tried out AresLite yet, but I've been very impressed with LimeWire. The standard version is free, a Pro version is also available.

Setup was quick & easy, even through a router & firewall. Even the strange songs I look for are often found (LimeWire gets the songs through the Gnutella network).

If you try out LimeWire, you'll probably want to add:
/Incomplete/
to the list of paths to skip (available with MP3-Boss Beta version only)

BitTorrent crashed on me within a few minutes of installing it...so I haven't taken another look at it yet.

I haven't looked at Ares Lite yet.

Let me know what you think...is there a better P2P sharing solution out there?

I found limewire to be woefully devoid of anything I'm interested in. KAZAA
lite rules.

No contest in my book...in all dimensions. on all.  Better songs, better interface.

I did forget to mention that one thing I don't like about LimeWire is that
the lack of directed searching (e.g., ONLY mp3 files >160Kbit), and the fact
that the output list is difficult.  I assume those problems are resolved
with LimeWire Pro (but don't know how much it costs).

That's one reason I sent out the message...to get some comments.  KaZaa was
discussed as 'old' (just like WinMX) in the usenet discussion forums, so I
didn't check it out.  I think my brother likes KaZaa the best too...but I
figured he was like me, and just hadn't tried anything new.

I took a look at KaZaa -- but after installing the Pro version (since the free version said it would run Ads on the computer), I got the following warning from Microsoft Antispy (and similar warnsing from Norton AntiVirus):

Type: Under Investigation
Threat Level: Moderate
Author: Sharman Networks Ltd.

Description: KaAaA is a peer-to-peer file sharing software that displays adware advertising and installs third party adware software on your computer.

It looks like KaZaa also installed Altnet, which is described as an elevated threat:
Threat Level: Elevated
Author: Altnet Inc./Brilliant Digital Entertainment, Inc.

Description: Altnet Topsearch acts as a search engine and runs as an Internet Explorer browser helper object. It can supply advertising to KaZaA users.

Is this something with the newer versions of KaZaa, or has it always had embedded objects like this?

I've been reasonably happy with LimeWire, although it is a pain that it doesn't let you select just mp3 files, or specify minimum bitrate.

It looks like the free version of Bearshare is ad supported.  Is that the version you use?  Does it install a bunch of adware?

I've used it solely for almost 3 years now and never collected virus, spam, etc. that I've been able to detect.  I use Webroot spy detector and Norton Antivirus.

I took a look at it -- it says that it is completely adware/spyware free.  I downloaded it...but haven't been brave enough to install it yet.

Funny thing about soulseek is that it works on donation.  If you pay nothing you get at the end of the line queue.  The software always tells you where you are.  If you're impatient and like the product you can 'donate' $5.00 and this gets you 30 days priority.   It puts the 'donaters' ahead of regular folks when downloading.  I personally don't care anymore, willing to wait for however long it takes to get to the next in line.

I can also vouch for soulseek.  It's free of spyware and adware.  I also recommend tossing them 5 bucks or so.  Not having priviledges sucks spam.

Also, get yourself a copy of Forte Agent and hit the newsgroups!   alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd is your friend!

The WinMX community is back, the files are back, and the users are taking a stand. Get Connected today at http://www.MXPie.com .

It is time for the RIAA to understand that they cannot destroy filesharing by intimidation any longer. They may be able to bully Corporations, but the users are not going to sit by and let it happen.

MXPIE at http://www.MXPie.com is an effort by the users and for the users, with an agenda of making WinMX at http://www.vladd44.com/mx/ a p2p network not only for the users, but maintained, organized and perpetuated by the people.

Come Join us, we believe that we can make a difference in this fight to take away our rights. We welcome all of those who are tired of going from one p2p network to another simply because the RIAA flexed its billions of dollars worth of muscles.

MXPIE at http://www.MXPie.com  is quick, easy and free to use, it contains no spyware, adware or any other form of malware. We even provide a manual modification that allows you to see exactly what is being done that only takes minutes to do yourself.

Another site worth note is Computer Help Forum at http://www.gemini777.net , this site has also been at the forefront of this movement, and can help you with any general computer problem that may or may not be related to WinMX.

Check out MXPIE Website at http://www.MXPie.com for everything you need.

I hope to see you on WinMX soon! Realtime help is available for WinMX 3.53 users. Go to WinMX Channels at http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6514 .

From a PCMAG review article:

-- Worst tech of 2006 --
10. Worst product that can get you arrested and ruin your PC: Kazaa 3
The latest version of Kazaa's P2P file-sharing app is loaded with all the fixin's! Unfortunately, those fixin's include system-gumming spyware, ridiculous flashing ads, and useless toolbars. Is the RIAA in on this? It should be, because this P2P app is the best argument against illegal downloading we've ever seen.
