The Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners Association will be presenting a seminar covering regulatory concerns and maintenance on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Hilton Hotel and Towers in Harrisburg, PA.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a 40-minute lunch.
Representatives of Commercial-Industrial Laundry Services (CILS), a company that services drycleaning and laundry industry machinery, will be the principal leaders of the seminar.
On the scheduled list of programs is a session by Robert Fink of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), who will examine the proposed OSHA ergonomic standards. The session will also feature a review of the currently enforced regulations and discussions of how inspection sites are chosen and worker right-to-know rules.
There will also be a new International Building Code session that will explain changes in regulations of the building code and how they affect the new construction and renovations of existing drycleaning facilities. The Department of Labor and Industry's Sheila Borne will be on hand to answer questions.
Cleaning machine maintenance and repairs will be the featured maintenance subject. Mike Fennicchia, owner of CILS, will look at rules and regulations regarding disclosure of maintenance and repairs on a monthly perc log.
Fennicchia will also use a big screen TV to show digital photos he has taken at various drycleaning plants, illustrating existing problems with machinery and how to go about analyzing them.
A show-and-tell lecture on how pneumatic/air cylinder operations work and what is needed to ensure that they continue working properly will be included in the program, as well.
The seminar will also examine how to change out and rebuild a cylinder, what parts are needed and where to get them, and how to tell when the repairman is needed.
PDCA's maintenance seminar will also focus on boilers, including return tanks, pumps and blow down units. Preventive maintenance solutions will be covered, as well as solutions to control the water side properly and how often burner diagnostics are needed and who to call for them.

The Minnesota Fabricare Institute will be presenting this year's convention, Image 2000, at the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, MN, from Feb. 25-27.
Located minutes away from Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel is one of only three circular casinos in the world. MFI has secured the rate of $69 per night (single or double occupancy) for attendees of the convention.
This year's event will focus largely on the theme of improving the industry's image.
Image 2000 has a full schedule of activities. Boiler exams for the state of Minnesota will be offered from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, followed by a spotting seminar at 9 a.m. by International Fabricare Institute Garment Analyst Chris Allsbrooks. Allsbrooks will continue the seminar throughout the day.
Also on Saturday, Jon Meijer, vice president of membership/ marketing at IFI, will also be on hand to moderate round table discussions on such topics as: up-charges; new technologies; wetcleaning; hiring practices; packaging; routes; plant maintenance; cleaning speciality garments; environmental pricing; and responding to bad press.
From 3 to 5 p.m., on the same day, there will be a Management Issues Forum where Dale Trippler of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will discuss environmental fund issues. Environmental expert Lynette Carney will join safety and health consultant Eric Rusch for a forum covering issues such as: environmental liability, the top three OSHA violations, sales tax issues, and what to do if a spill occurs.
Also on Saturday, MFI plans to unveil its new identity, logo and a 30-second TV commercial that promotes the industry during MFI's annual meeting at noon.
On Sunday, Feb. 27, Chris Allsbrooks and Jon Meijer of IFI will also conduct a seminar on customer service training from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Illinois State Fabricare Association will be hosting an Allied Trades Breakfast Meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 8.
The event will be held at The Wyndham Garden Hotel in Oakbrook Terrace, located at 17 W. 350 22nd St. in Oakbrook Terrace, just east of Summit/Midwest Road, north of I-88 and west of I-294.
Allied trade members are invited to send two representatives to the breakfast at no charge. Additional representatives, as well as non-member allied trades are invited to attend for a cost of $17.50 per person.
The topics scheduled to be discussed include: Chicago 2000; IFI's incentive program for allied trades; legislative issues; and the Illinois Drycleaner Star Recognition Program.

New York drycleaners who use perc have until the March 25, 2000 deadline to complete the 16-hour training course and the two-hour long Department of Environmental Conservation-prepared examination in order to receive the proper certification.
DEC certification is required as a result of the New York Negotiated Rule Making Part 232, which was put into inception in order to regulate air contaminants from perc-using drycleaning facilities.
To date, Neighborhood Cleaners Association-International has enrolled more than 1,300 students in its DEC certification training program. Already, 900 students have completed the course and taken the test, which contains 100 multiple choice questions and is an open book exam.
In February, NCA-I has many training opportunities available. One training session at NCA-I in New York, NY, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13; 7 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15; and 7 to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17.
Evangelos Machinery in the Bronx, NY will be the site of a training session that covers a four-evening time frame, meeting from 7 to 11 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays and Wednesdays on Feb. 22, 23 and 29, culminating on March 1.
There will also be a session for the Duchess, Ulster, Sullivan and Orange counties from 7 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 22, 23, 29 and March 1. The exact location will be announced later.
NCA-I will also be offering classes in Korean. One session will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13 and from 7 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15 and Thursday, Feb. 17.
A four evening session will also be offered from 7 to 11 p.m. on the nights of Feb. 22, 23, 29 and March 1.
Class size is limited to 30 people and space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The year 2000 denotes the 25th anniversary of the unification of several state organizations to form the North East Fabricare Association, which will celebrate that landmark by hosting Fabricare Image 2000 on April 1-2, 2000 at the Worcester Centrum Centre in Worcester, MA.
The event will begin on March 31, 2000, with a "Get Re-acquainted Friday Night Cocktail Reception" from 7 to 9 p.m.
On Saturday, April 1, David Winford will present "Solving the E-myth" at 8:30 a.m., followed by a panel discussion about the latest in drycleaning technologies.
The schedule for Sunday, April 2, includes "Membership Doesn't Cost, It Pays" from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and "Fabrics and Fashions" from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
From 7 p.m. to midnight on April 1, NEFA will present a 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner.

NEFA will be offering several New York certification classes in the coming months.
From Feb. 4-6, classes will be in Syracuse, NY, and from Feb. 18-20, classes will be at Albany, NY.
Hours for the classes are: 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday evenings; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
NEFA will also be presenting certification courses at Columbia Drycleaning Machinery in West Babylon, NY, on March 7-8 and March 14-15. Class hours will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

Last year, Albany Day proved successful for New York State drycleaners and the Neighborhood Cleaners Association-International hopes that Albany Day 2000 will be equally successful.
Some of the results from Albany Day 1999 included: a deadline extension for the Financial Assistance Business program; a rollback date for FAB; and the "Brodsky Bill" did not get out of committee.
This year's event will commence on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, when drycleaners will gather once again in Albany, NY, in order to show legislative members that New York drycleaners have a voice to be heard.
This year, NCA-I believes many issues need to be addressed, including: an extension and broadening of the benefit base for the existing FAB program; multi-lingual testing under the State Certification Program; amnesty for Part 232 paperwork violations prior to the March 25, 2000 certification training deadline; stand alone building definitions; machinery certification that protects new equipment investments; and financial assistance for NY cleaners.
NCA-I plans to run buses from the metropolitan New York City area. Outlying chapters will also be making transportation arrangements as needed.

Pre-registration will close on Feb., 29 for the Southwest Drycleaner's Big 2000 Show, scheduled for March 17-19 in Fort Worth, TX.
The Fort Worth Convention Center will be the site for this year's event, which will include over 250 display booths in its exhibit hall. The exhibit hall will remain open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 19.
Jan Hargrave will kick off the educational seminars on Saturday, March 18, with a discussion of "The Importance of Non-Verbal Communication in Customer Service." The lecture is designed to help attendees learn ways to motivate their employees to excel in performance and increase customer service.
Hargrave has been featured on The Maury Povich Show, The Montel Williams Show, E-Entertainment Television, The Lifetime Channel and The Ricki Lake Show.
Later in the evening, SDA will host a Convention Social and Western Ho-Down at 7 p.m., featuring the western-flavored music of the Duce and a Half Band and Kim O'Conner.
On Sunday, March 19, leading industry consultants Chris Allsbrooks and Jane Zellers will offer drycleaners a fun and informational seminar from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. that will focus on both common and uncommon problem garments for fabric care specialists.
In addition to the informational seminars, IFI's Vice President of Asian Affairs, Sam Choi, will be visiting attendees in the SDA booth during trade show hours. Rep. Joe Barton, champion of the Barton Bill legislation for cleaners, has also been invited to attend the Big 2000 Show.
Other events on the schedule include a general membership and awards meeting that begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 17, and will feature IFI president Eric Kloter, which is followed by a management seminar by "Cowboy Cleaner" Kenney Slatten that starts at 2:30 p.m.
There will also be a Louisiana-Mississippi Drycleaners and Laundry Association reception at 6 p.m. and a 6:30 p.m. SDA welcome reception (featuring the music of the singing cowboy, Kim O'Connor) on the evening of Friday, March 17.

New officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Cleaning and Laundry Association Executives (CLAE) in Scottsdale, AZ.
The new CLAE president is Andy Stanley of the Southwest Drycleaners Association.
Peter Blake of the North East Fabricare association is the vice president, Jean Warnke Bragg of the Textile Maintenance Association of Texas is the treasurer; and Darienne Wilson of the Louisiana and Mississippi Drycleaners and Launderers Association is the secretary.
Also at the meeting the group adopted the following mission statement: "CLAE is an informal study group that meets at least once a year to exchange ideas relating to the cleaning and laundry industry."
CLAE's next annual meeting will be Nov 9-11 in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Two sessions of Royaltone's wet cleaning and dry cleaning leather academy class for plant owners and managers are planned in the coming months at the Suedemate Leather Cleaning Plant in Tulsa, OK.
The next session will be April 6-7 and another session is scheduled for June 8-9.
Students learn how to safely spot, wetclean, dryclean, press and refinish suedes, leathers and furs much like they do cloth garments, using perc, petroleum, Exxon 2000 and water. They also gain insight into how the other plant owners and managers operate.
Attendees receive a complete instruction manual on wetcleaning and drycleaning to complement the classroom and in-plant hands-on training. Course completion certificates are awarded to each student upon completion of the training and after-training support is also provided via a toll free telephone hotline.

The Tennessee Fabricare Association will be holding its annual meeting from March 10-11 at the Grand Casino and Resort, Tunica, in Robinsville, MS.
Due to the popularity of the Grand Casino and Resort, Tunica, which offers Las Vegas-style entertainment, TFA has recommended that attendees make their room reservations as early as possible.
The resort is set on 2,200 acres adjacent to the Mississippi River and has 24-hour gaming action. A special rate of $72 single or double occupancy is being offered for meeting-goers.

The South Eastern Fabricare Association will begin 2000 with an array of educational opportunities for members of the drycleaning industry, including many classes for cleaners who speak Spanish.
Metty Alanis will lend her technical knowledge during two Basic and Advanced Drycleaning classes that will be taught entirely in Spanish on March 25 in Tampa, FL, and on March 26 in Orlando, FL.
An English version of the class will be offered in Columbia, SC, on Feb. 5, and in Spartanburg, SC, on Feb. 6, and will be taught by Martin Young. A copy of the Master Drycleaners Notebook will be given to students.
A course on Shirt Finishing will be taught by instructor Lisa Dusak, who will cover the mechanics of the shirt finishing unit and the required steam finishes, dwell times and daily requirements of the equipment. Dusak will also speak about padding, shirt preparation, dressing of the buck and offers several tips and tricks that will help cleaners put out a perfect shirt.
The classes will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the following dates and cities: Feb. 7 in Atlanta, GA; Feb. 8 in Birmingham, AL; Feb. 9 in Mobile, AL; and Feb. 10 in Montgomery, AL.
Later in February and early March, industry expert Stan Caplan will be teaching a Basic and Advanced Drycleaning course. Dates and cities include: Feb. 19 in West Palm, FL; Feb. 20 in Lakeland, FL; March 4 in St. Petersburg, FL; and March 5 in Leesburg, FL.

The Western States Drycleaners and Launderers Association will be holding a fundraising banquet on Feb. 26 at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel, located at I-17 at the northeast corner of Dunlap in Phoenix, AZ.
Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. After announcements and introductions, guest speaker Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County Sheriff, will begin speaking at 8 p.m.
Widely recognized at "America's Toughest Sheriff," Arpaio is most noted for his innovations such as the nation's largest tent city for convicts. He also has implemented many "chain gangs" of male and female convicts.
Arpaio has spent over 25 years in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and he has a voter approval rating that is consistently 85%, a remarkably high percentage for any public figure.
Sheriff Arpaio's presentation will offer his unique, and often humorous perspective, on his position, politics, and life, in general.
The night will conclude with door prizes, raffles and auctions beginning at about 8:45 p.m. Cost for the dinner is $100 per couple, or $60 for single.

Mike Jordan of Bell Drapery Cleaners is now the association's president and Mike Felton of Janelle's Magic Touch Cleaners is president-elect. The position of treasurer went to Natalie Clapick of Dryclean USA; Mark Witt of Arcadia Cleaners is chairman of the board.
Other positions include: V.P., Region II (Tucson, AZ) is Cliff Schneider of Rincon Cleaners; V.P., Region III (Las Vegas, NV) is Eddie Los, of Village East Cleaners; and V.P., Region IV (Reno, NV) is Jerry Cohen of Lakeridge Cleaners.

1999 Holiday Social
For its final event of the century, WSDLA also hosted a 1999 Holiday Social at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix, AZ.
The evening was highlighted with seasonal music, dinner, dancing and door prizes, and included an appearance by guest speaker Bill Fisher, the executive director for the International Fabricare Institute.
WSDLA's 1999 Holiday Social finished with an awards presentation that honored many of its members.
Former WSDLA President Mark Witt recognized the efforts of those in charge of various 1999 WSDLA functions.
The following events, and chairs of those events, were honored: Larry and Natalie Clapick, Fundraising Auction and Banquet; Dick Walton, Annual Benefit Golf Tournament; Mike Felton, Hope for the Holidays; and Dave Link, Holiday Social.
The final award of the evening was presented to Mark Witt by in-coming President Mike Jordan, who promised to make every effort to fill the role of his predecessor.
Committee Chairman Dave Link added final comments, "I'd really like to express my appreciation for the efforts of the Holiday Social Committee -- Chris Arnold, Las Vegas, Jerry Cohen, Reno, and Tom Thomas, Tucson -- and for the support of all those in attendance. This was a wonderful event, a great way to welcome in a new millennium."
The Peninsula Dry Cleaners Association has scheduled two classes to help cleaners comply with California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations.
CARB requires all perc drycleaners to take an Environmental Training class, become certified, and have the certificate posted when the enforcement agent performs an inspection. Failure to have a certificate may bring a violation and fine of $150.
A Recertification Class will be held Feb. 23 for cleaners who have already taken the original Environmental Training Class. Regulations requires that the three-hour refreshers course be taken before the original certificate expires.
The class will be given at the Villa Hotel, 4000 Elk Camino Real in San Mateo from 7 to 10 p.m. enrollment is limited to 30 people. Students must pre-pay the registration fee of $75 and bring a photo ID, their original certificate and a leak detector to the class.
A first-time class will be offered on Saturday, March 4 at the same location. The six-hour course costs $150. Students must bring a legal photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.) to the class to receive the certificate of completion.

The classes are part of PDCA's program to assist cleaners with compliance. The association provides a variety of other membership benefits, including free workshops, a monthly publication and credit card and bank services. The California Cleaners will hold a Northern California Dry Cleaning School on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Snow's Cleaners in Stockton, CA.
The class is the first of a two-part program covering fibers. The second workshop will be held in April.
The first workshop will focus on fiber identification procedures to assist in delineating between cellulose, protein, mineral and man-made fibers. The second workshop will cover fabric surface design, fabric and fiber finishes and dyes and dyeing techniques.
The instructor will be Bob Blackburn, who is a certified instructor through the California Air Resources Board.
The workshop hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The registration fee of $75 per CCA member and $125 per non-member, includes donuts and coffee; lunch is not provided.
