TCATA takes convention to Cancun
Tapping into the industry’s potential for growth and profitability will be the main themes threading their way into TCATA’s  annual management and educational conference set for April 21-24 in Cancun, Mexico.
This year’s feature speaker, Dave Kahle, will focus on helping attendees proactively change their sales strategies into more successful sales realities.
Kahle has been the number one salesman in the country for two different companies in two distinct industries and he once took a new territory to over $5 million in sales in less than five years.  He will cover a variety of topics throughout his “Transforming Your Sales Force for the 21st Century” program, including: what a model of the 21st century sales force looks like; six specific steps to gain a competitive edge by knowing your customers better than anyone else; how to precisely measure the productivity of every salesperson; why investing in developing your people can bring you huge returns; how to overcome the number one complaint salespeople have about their managers; how-to steps to create an ongoing system for continues improvement; six strategies for motivating salespeople above and beyond the compensation plan; and how to methodically recruit excellent sales performers.
Kahle will present one program from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 23. The second session is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 24.
Registration for the conference will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 21. TCATA’s board will meet from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Individual meetings for manufacturers and distributors will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. that day. The opening reception follows at 6:30 p.m.
On Monday, attendees can  participate in a trip to Xcaret, an eco-archeological park that offers a variety of activities, from snorkeling in an underground river to swimming with dolphins to visiting exotic locales, such as the park’s aviary, butterfly pavilion, bat cave, aquarium or botanical garden. The visit to Xcaret will begin at 11:30 a.m. and run through about 10 p.m. that night.
TCATA also has planned a Silver Circle Club Luncheon from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 and a reception and closing dinner later that evening from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Cost for the program is $545 for members and $245 for their spouses, if registration is completed by March 21. After that date, the cost goes up to $595 for members and $295 for spouses.
Because the conference is in Mexico, attendees need a passport or an original birth certificate (or a notarized copy) and a picture. I.D.
A block of rooms is reserved at the convention hotel, the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Cancun at a rate of $205 plus 12% tax per night per room for all junior suites. TCATA seeks scholarship candidates
The Textile Care Allied Trades Association is accepting applications for its collegiate scholarship funds. This year, two scholarships will be awarded to deserving candidates, including the Dean Allen Educational Fund and the recently established Max Zimmerman Education Fund.
Both will provide $1,000 per year for up to four years of college for each winner. The eligibility requirements stipulate that the candidates must be graduates of public or private secondary schools and are full-time employees of a TCATA member company. Children of full-time employees are also eligible to receive the education funds.
The deadline for submitted applicants is April 1, 2002. The scholarships will work toward the academic year that begins in the Fall.
Many factors will play a part in the selection process. TCATA hopes to award candidates on the basis of their academic achievement and leadership qualities. Extra-curricular and other non-academic accomplishments will be factored in to the decision process. Originally, the scholarship programs were created by TCATA to show the organization’s appreciation of its members and their employees for all their years of dedicated service. This year, the group hopes to publicize the program by having member companies place a poster announcing its details in areas where employees gather.
For more information, including how to obtain a poster for your company, call the association’s office at (973) 244-1790.
TCATA is accepting contributions from members  to either of the two scholarship funds.
