New name for hydrocarbon cleaners
The National Coalition of Petroleum Dry Cleaners, formed in 1997 to represent the interests of petroleum drycleaners and to address issues specific to the use of hydrocarbon solvents, has taken on a new name — the Hydrocarbon Cleaners Association.
Since its inception, the groups has wrestled with confusion over the terms hydrocarbon and petroleum.
“Even though the terms are synonymous, some people were inclined to believe the newer hydrocarbon solvents were different from other established solvent, the association said. To bridge that distinction, it added “hydrocarbon” to its name, becoming the National Coalition of Petroleum/Hydrocarbon Dry Cleaners.
This solution brought a semblance of order to any of the confusion about who was eligible to be a part of the coalition, but it created a separate problem — the coalition name was a mouthful. In times when simple, clear branding is the norm, “NCPHDC” stood out as an alphabet soup of letters.
Since hydrocarbon and petroleum are the same thing, be it a solvent with a 105° flashpoint or one with a 145° flashpoint, the name has been simplified to the Hydrocarbon Cleaners Association — HCA.
“It underscores the fact that all cleaners using a hydrocarbon-based (or petroleum-based,) solvent face the same regulatory, machinery and training issues; issues separate and different than those cleaners using other solvents,” the association said. “We believe this simple yet defining name helps define what were are and what issues we aspire to represent.”
HCA describes its mission as follows:
1. Promulgating  policies and conducting activities for the betterment of all those individuals or firms involved in some aspect of the petroleum drycleaning  industry.
2. Providing opportunities for dialogue, advancement, and  improvement of all aspects of the petroleum drycleaning industry through  meetings, seminars, communications, publications, and other similar programs and activities.
3. Articulating and advocating the needs and interests of the petroleum drycleaning industry before legislative,  administrative, and judicial branches of local, state, and national  governments.
4. Working on behalf of the petroleum drycleaning industry, with suppliers, distributors, dealers, insurers, and customers directly and through their association in matters involving the business and  governmental affairs of the industry.
Mike Jones of Highland Cleaners in Louisville, KY, is the current president. He can be reached at (502) 454-4641 . HCA also has a web site at www.petroleumdrycleaners.org.
