The last e-mail from the M&M newsletter
Editor’s Note: For the past several years Stan Golomb, in addition to his monthly articles for National Clothesline, produced and e-mail newsletter which he sent at no charge to anyone interested. He used the newsletter to share his comments and ideas on a variety of subjects ranging from industry-specific topics to politics to life in general. The following is an excerpt from the final M&M newsletter that he sent out to several hundred subscribers in March.

Here is some background for those who don’t know my history.
I started the Golomb Group at age 55 in 1980, 22 years ago. Over the years, the company has grown and we now have a staff of highly intelligent people with many skills in communications, computers, mail processing, demographics and all phases of marketing.
Over the years, I have had three heart attacks starting at age 36. I never let this slow me down but in 1988, with a heart by-pass operation, I realized I was not invincible.
A year later, I developed congestive heart failure and the only way I could extend my life was to have a heart transplant. I was very lucky and received one.
That was 12 years ago and since then, I have had two bouts with skin cancer and surgery, which was followed by radiation treatments.
Years ago, I realized that I needed to find someone with a vast knowledge of drycleaning, entrepreneurial skills and a person young enough so they could take over at the Golomb Group.
I have known Dennis McCrory as a customer and then as a friend for over 17 years. He was one of the very first to recognize the power of a program we call “Stan’s Plan” that is an ongoing mail program to a targeted market.
Dennis had a very successful plant in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, and was able to grow rapidly in spite of intense price cutting competition.
I visited his plant many times and was impressed with the his business acumen. Finally we got together to discuss his joining the Golomb Group.
A year and a half ago, Dennis sold his business in New Orleans and moved his family to Hinsdale, Illinois. Dennis was 52, three years younger than I was when I started the Golomb Group and I knew I had the right man for the job.
He has done an outstanding job running the company and I have stayed on as a consultant. I go to the office every day to provide whatever help I can.
Dennis has the energy that I am losing and I feel fully confident that the future of the Golomb Group is in good hands.
At this point, I decided to devote most of my time to writing as this doesn’t require the energy needed to run a business and writing is a fun job for me.
I just completed my third book that is going into print momentarily. The book is called, “The Entrepreneur’s Club,” and is about a mythical group of people who form a club to help each other reach the American Dream.
Now, at age 77, I will reserve my energy for thinking up strategies that will help the members of the Golomb Group.
I want to thank all of you for being part of the M&M program for these past two years. I want you to know that you can contact me with any ideas, problems or just to stay in touch. I promise to answer any mail.

Your correspondent,
Stan Golomb
