Jane Rising stars on Heloise show
In an effort to inform a greater number of consumers on proper clothing care tips, IFI’s Jane Rising recently tried a new approach: the radio.
Rising, who is IFI’s Manager of Education and Training, was featured as a guest on Ask Heloise, a new nationally-syndicated radio show launched by Talk America on September 9.
The program is hosted by Heloise, who has offered “Hints from Heloise” in her newspaper column for over 40 years. Currently, she appears in more than 500 newspapers in the U.S. and abroad and works as a contributing editor for Good Housekeeping magazine, where she writes a popular “Household Helpline” column. Overall, her readership is estimated to be over 50 million.
On September 26, she sought garment care advice from Rising on her hour-long radio program. Topics discussed on the show included some tips on dress shields, why some silks contain persistent foul odors, and the importance of following care label instructions on clothing, such as garments that read “Do Not Wash, Do Not Dryclean.”
“I like to help consumers find answers to their clothing care questions and inform them of how their drycleaner can help them,” Rising explained. “I find it fascinating how little most people know about how to care for their clothes and how we as an industry can help with their clothing care problems.”
The guest appearance on the show was an opportunity for IFI to gain national exposure, but it wasn’t a development that took place overnight. IFI has cultivated its relationship with Heloise since the 1980s when she visited the association’s headquarters while researching a project related to the FTC’s Care Label Rule. Since then, she has often contacted the IFI office to discuss advice or verify information she has received on the subject of garment care.
Rising’s appearance was successful enough to warrant an invitation to return as a guest again on Heloises’ Talk America show that will air December 4.
