TCATA looking for scholars
Time is running out for those planning to submit scholarship application forms to the Textile Care Allied Trades Association. The deadline is April 1, 2003.
Two scholarships will be awarded this year — the Dean Allen Educational Fund and the Max Zimmerman Educational Fund. Each will provide the recipient with $1,000 per year for up to four years of college.
The first scholarship is named after Dean Allen, who spent 42 years working at Allen and Vickers, a family-owned business that distributed laundry and drycleaning equipment in Atlanta, GA. His involvement with the industry included a stint as vice president of the TCATA Distributor Group.  He also served two terms as president of TCATA and was on the association’s board of directors.
The second scholarship honors Max Zimmerman, who first started working at his father’s drycleaning plant when he was seven years old.
In 1953, he founded his own drycleaning company and remained active in the industry and TCATA until his death in 2000. He served as secretary-treasurer and was on the board for TCATA and received all three awards the association gives in recognition of outstanding service in the industry.
To be eligible for either scholarship, applicants must be a full-time employee or the son or daughter of a full-time employee of a member company in good standing with TCATA.
TCATA will award the scholarships based on: leadership qualities; academic achievement measured by Scholarship Aptitude Test or American College Test scores and high school grade point average; and the student’s planned course of study with higher consideration given to those who plan to pursue work in the textile care industry.
To obtain an application for or find out more information on the scholarships, visit www.tcata.org or call (973) 244-1790.
TCATA requests from each applicant a copy of their SAT or ACT scores; transcripts of all high school and college grades; a letter from a high school principal or other official describing the student’s leadership qualities; and a letter from the applicant to TCATA’s Scholarship Committee which describes their personal accomplishments, immediate goals and future academic and career objectives.
