NCA Survival Fund gets boost
raffle
NCA members Joseph Hallak and Debra Kravet took their turn manning the table where raffle tickets and ball caps were sold to raise money for NCA’s Survival Fund during the TexCare show in Secaucus, NJ, in April.
The Survival Fund started last year by the Neighborhood Cleaners Association got a boost to the tune of about $8,000 at the association’s TexCare exhibition last month.
Raffle tickets and NCA baseball caps were sold during the show to raise money for the fund that NCA started last year to help fight the proposed perc ban in southern California.
As part of its involvement in California, NCA was asked to help fund a public relations campaign to counter the negative publicity being generated by environmentalists. NCA’s Board of Directors got the fund going with contributions of more than $4,000.
Since that time, NCA received $16,750 in contributions for the fund. In addition to $4,000 given to the California Cleaners Association to aid the public relations effort, another $12,000 was used to hire a lobbyist who convinced Chicago Alderman Edward Burke to modify his proposal for a ban on perc use in residential buildings and hotels in Chicago. Another $5,000 went to hire a lobbyist in Massachusetts to battle the prohibition of septic tank discharges for shirt laundry and wetcleaning.
NCA anticipates more money will be needed to continue those battles as well as possible action in New York State where regulations governing drycleaning may be opened for amendments.
“You never know where the next piece of legislation will surface,” NCA said in an appeal for support of its Survival Fund. “The industry must be prepared to act quickly.”
The fund can only be used for political action and expert testimony and none will to into the NCA general coffers, the association said.
