Deadline near for IFI nominations
Several of the industry’s standout members will be honored at a special ceremony for the International Fabricare Institute’s 3rd Annual Meritorious Service Awards during Clean ’03 in Las Vegas this August.
However, before that happens, there is still a little time left to submit nominations. The deadline is May 15.
To ensure a fair process, IFI requests that anyone submitting nominations include only one individual or organization per category. Those recommending candidates for more than one category should turn in a separate form for each.
The awards were originally given out in 1999 as a mean to honor plant owners, educators, suppliers and other individuals who have impacted the industry in a positive manner. Nominations are not limited to only IFI members.

Diamond Achievement Award — will differ from the formats of the past two years.
IFI will no longer accept nominations for the honor; instead, a special Awards Selection Committee will scrutinize the candidates submitted for the other six categories in hopes of finding someone who rises above the other nominees.
Traditionally, the Diamond Achievement Award is given to an individual who has made an extraordinary contribution that has improved the drycleaning industry in a unique way.
Past winners of the honor include Barney Deden  and Stan Golomb.
Deden won in 1999 for his relentless efforts as a proponent of the Barton Bill.
Golomb, who founded the Golomb Group of Willowbrook, IL, was recognized in 2001 for his selfless lifetime efforts in helping cleaners make their businesses successful.
Other award categories include:
Industry Positive Recognition Award: This award is given to individuals who have produced tremendous results in a quest to generate positive publicity for the industry.
Ed Boorstein, CED, CPD, CPW, owner of Prestige Exceptional Fabricare in Silver Spring, MD, earned the award in 1999 and Barbara Harvey, owner of Fabricare By Fran in Severna Park, MD, was the 2001 recipient.
Legislative-Regulatory Award: Abraham Cho, who previously owned Natural Cleaners in Middletown, NJ, was the first winner of this distinction, which celebrates an individual who actively works on critical legislative or regulatory issues that greatly affect cleaners. John Neal, owner of Ineeda Cleaners in Hutchinson, KS, earned the honor in 2001.
Technology Trailblazer Award: Designed to recognize individuals who have conducted innovative research on industry equipment or solvents that have resulted in a viable and commercially proven technology, this honor was not given in 2001 because IFI felt that there had not been any advances significant enough to warrant the merit. In 1999 the Exxon Chemical Company took home the award.
Allied Trades Award: Every two years, IFI honors suppliers or individuals who have provided long-term service of a substantial nature and have provided a solid system of support for its members cleaners.
Ed Ustik of Phenix Supply Company won in 1999. Henry and Jan Parker of Safety & Environmental Compliance Consultants, Inc., were honored in 2001.
Green Fields Award: This Meritorious Service Award acknowledges people or organizations who have made a lasting contribution to the industry concerning an environmental-related issue or initiative.
Ann Hargrove of Lyons, IL, was the 1999 winner for her pioneering efforts in wetcleaning.  In 2001, Dr. Manfred Wentz received the award.
Commitment to Professionalism Award: Only individuals who help raise the bar of professionalism for the industry may ever know this particular honor.
Carmelia Bernardi of Woonsocket, RI, was chosen in 1999. In 2001, IFI selected Don Desrosiers, owner of Tailwind Shirt Systems in Fall River, MA.
