NCALC serves up compliance, cleaning seminars this Fall
It’s shaping up to be a busy Fall for cleaners in North Carolina. Several educational seminars will be offered in the coming months.
The North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners will host two training sessions on environmental compliance. Topics covered will include: hazardous waste handling, storage, disposal and record keeping; air quality drycleaning requirements, operations, inspections, maintenance and record keeping; solvent handling minimum management practices, record keeping and emergency response plans; and community right-to-know requirements.
The dates and locations are: Saturday, Sept. 6 at Room 70 of the Phifer Building at Western Piedmont Community College in Morgantown, NC and Saturday, Sept. 20 at Bowen Cleaners, located at 1990 Smythewyck Dr. in Greenville, NC. Both seminars will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
NCALC also seeks to help cleaners who want to learn more about cleaning and spotting with petroleum, hydrocarbon and GreenEarth solvents.
A seminar is planned for Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Medlin-Davis Cleaners, 2507 Reliance Ave. in Apex, NC.
Attendees will learn more about alternative solvent maintenance, load classification and cycles, as well as pre- and post-spotting in order to maximize quality and production.
NCALC will also present an intermediate drycleaning and spotting class on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The location will be Cliffdale Cleaners, 5791 Cliffdale Rd. in Fayetteville, NC.
The class is ideal for cleaners with a minimum of one year of experience. Drycleaning systems operation, maintenance and inspection, special cleaning cycles, fabric/garment testing, and wet and dry spotting will all be discussed.
All aforementioned seminars will cost $59 for members and $79 for non-members.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, IFI Vice President of Asian Affairs Sam Choi will present a seminar for Korean drycleaners entitled “How to Survive and Prosper in a Highly Competitive Market.”
It will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Imperial Gourmet Restaurant at the corner of Wendover Avenue West exit off I-40 in Greensboro, NC. Dinner is included with the seminar. The cost is $19 per person.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, Lisa Taber, program manager of the Dry-Cleaning Solvent Clean-up Act, will present “Environmental Compliance” from 8 a.m. to noon.
Taber will explain the benefits and requirements of the program, including the Minimum Management Practice Rules.
Also present will be Tony Pendola, Small Business Ombudsmen from the NCDENR Customer Service Center. He will outline the confidential services of the Customer Service Center and the air quality monitoring and record keeping requirements of the NESHAP and DSCA program.
The seminar will be at Tri-State Laundry Equipment Company, 1031 East Mountain Street, Kernersville, NC. A Korean translator will be provided. The cost is $29 per person.
Additionally, Tri-State will host a live equipment show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. For more information on any upcoming event, call NCALC at (336) 389-9011.


SEFA offers stain removal class in S. Carolina
The South Eastern Fabricare Association will sponsor a hands-on stain removal workshop on Saturday, Sept. 13.
The program will take place at Ed Robinson Laundry and Dry Cleaners, 2551 Forest Dr. in Columbia, SC, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Industry expert Martin Young will serve as instructor. He’ll be offering a fun and informational seminar on today’s problem stains, outlining the correct uses of acids and alkalis and lubricants and how each reacts to certain fibers, fabrics, dyes and finishes.
He will present over 100 practical operating tips and will encourage cleaners to bring in their problem garments.
The cost is $99 for SEFA/IFI members and $89 each for additional members from the same plant. Non-members pay $129 each.
