Florida cleaners honored for treatment of employees
Acme Cleaners was recognized recently by the Orlando Sentinel as one of Central Florida’s “Top 100” companies for working families. Plant owners Jim and Sarah Parham were also honored by Florida magazine with its 2003 Small Wonder Award, given to outstanding companies with 50 or less employees.
In addition to offering their employees hospitalization, dental and eyeglass insurance, the company also has a 401(k) plan, paid vacation, six paid holidays, 100% tuition reimbursement for college classes, an annual company picnic and free financial advice.
“Most small businesses aren’t able to offer benefits because of their costs,” Sarah Parham told Florida magazine. “Our employees may not make per hour what others might, but when you add in the benefits, it’s almost like golden handcuffs.”
Acme also matches a $5-per-week contribution for holiday spending for its Christmas Club,  and hosts lunchtime parenting seminars, as well as weekly visits from a trained nutritionist.
