A new name for IFI’s school
Classes offered at the International Fabricare Institute have been known for years simply as “resident courses” occasionally causing some confusion among cleaners.
To remedy the situation, IFI’s Education Department has adopted a new name for the school: The School of Dry Cleaning Technology.
The first round of courses at the newly-named school in 2004 saw 22 students graduate from the Introduction to Dry Cleaning course in January, 20 from the Advanced Dry Cleaning course in February and nine from the Korean-language Introduction to Dry Cleaning course in January. A total of 32 students have completed the bilingual Introduction to Dry Cleaning course since IFI’s School of Dry Cleaning Technology began translating it into Korean last year. The Advanced Dry Cleaning Course will be offered for the first time in Korean from July 19-30.
IFI will present four upcoming sessions of its introductory class designed for individuals with less than one year of overall cleaning experience.
The class examines many topics, such as the principles of the drycleaning process, the drycleaning machine and fibers and fabrics.
Other subjects to be discussed include: work flow; assembly and invoicing; cleaning and drying cycles; elementary stain removal and finishing procedures for pants, coats and skirts.
Course dates are: May 3-7, July 12-16, August 9-13, and October 18-22. The July 12-16 class will also be available in Korean.
Tuition for the introductory course is $450 for IFI members and $695 for non-members.
After completing the introductory course, students may want to further their studies with the two-week advanced course, which is suitable for owners or managers with more than one year of production experience.
More advanced stain removal procedures will be taught, as well as bleaching, specialty fabrics and fiber identification and finishing blouses, dresses, ties, all-weather coats, pleats, pile fabrics, silks and rayons.
Students will also learn about: wetcleaning; solvents, detergents, moisture, filtration and distillation for perchloroethylene and petroleum systems; troubleshooting the drycleaning system; regulations and care labeling; plant layout and work flow; customer service; and business management.
The course will take place May 10-21; July 19-30; August 16-27; and October 25-November 5.
Tuition is $900 for IFI members and $1,390 for non-members. Students have the option to take both courses together for a three-week stretch, which costs $1,250 for IFI members and $1,995 for non-members.
All general courses are held at IFI’s headquarters, located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
