Fabricare 2004 show in Long Beach to
focus
on themes of industry education, unification
The California
Cleaners Association is
basing the core of its 2004 Fabricare convention and trade show
on two basic precepts: cleaners must educate themselves on
their craft to ensure their business will survive, and they
must unite together in order for the industry to thrive.
Cleaners will get their fill of both
education and unification by attending the event, which will be
held from August 27-29 at the Long Beach Convention Center.
An Early Bird Cocktail Reception will
start the ball rolling on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm before
the educational seminars begin at 9 am on the following
morning.
“Leases — How to Negotiate (Or
Renegotiate) For Maximum Success!” will be presented
first by Kelly Kelleher of Kelleher Equipment Co.
Attendees will learn how leases can
contain detrimental components, such as hidden costs, fine
print conditions and environmental concerns, thus leading to a
painful negotiation process. Armed with the right knowledge,
however, cleaners can avoid common pitfalls and make certain
they make the best deal possible.
Afterward, “Contamination! They Want
to Test. What Do You Do?” will be delivered by Lisa Bond
of Richards Watson Gershon. She will divulge to cleaners the
secrets of how to best handle environmental testing requests
made by landlords, or city or community members. The program
will run from 10:15 to 11:30 am
Immediately following will be the
convention’s official opening ceremony, which will
include the election of CCA’s 2004-2005 officers, the
division election results and a meeting of the
association’s board of directors.
Later on, the exhibit hall will be open
from 1 to 5:30 pm It will also be open on Saturday from 11 am
to 5:30 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm
Saturday’s educational sessions will
begin with a seminar on “Computers, Communication and
Cleaners” at 8:45 am Gary Axelson of Lakeside French
Cleaners and Brooksher Banks of Banks & Associates will
help cleaners capitalize on their point-of-sale computer
systems.
At 10 am, Chris Baggot of Exact Target
will examine the subject of “E-Marketing for Your
Business — It’s Easier Than You Think.”
A detailed look at “What Regulations
Might Be Coming Your Way — Solvents, Air Districts, the
Legislature & You!” will promptly start at 10 am on
Sunday morning. Invited panel participants will include: CCA
lobbyist, Mike Belote of California Advocates; Nora Nealis of
the National Cleaners Association; Steve Risotto of Halogenated
Solvents Industry Alliance; Robert Wyman of Latham and Watkins;
and a representative from the California Air Resources Board.
In addition to the education programs, CCA
will offer many opportunities for attendees to socialize, as
well. A “Catch the Wave” cocktail party is set to
start at 5:30 pm on Friday night.
On the following evening, there will be a
“President’s Reception and Dinner” from 7 to
10 pm The keynote speaker will be comedian Mack Dryden, who has
appeared on numerous television shows, several feature films
and whose writing and voice can be heard on more than 500 radio
stations every week. During the festivities, CCA will also
officially install its new officers and announce the winners of
the Dry Cleaner and Allied Trades Member of the Year Awards.
This year’s headquarters hotel will
be the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, located at 200 S. Pine Ave.

occupancy tax for those who call (562) 491-1234 or (800)
