Letter to the Editor
To the Editor:
I wanted to respond to your article, “An Uproar over extra charge for super-size dress,” in your September 4, 2004 issue.
Charging an extra fee for plus sizes is not discrimination against larger sized people. If you look at apparel catalogs or check prices at clothing and department stores, you will see that sizes 2x and above actually cost about $2 more just to buy due to the extra material used and, assumably, extra cost in making them. So, if any judge rules that there cannot be an extra charge for cleaning plus-size clothes, anyone could also then bring up the same charges against the retail industry.
However, as I said before, and I hope the lawyers will point out, charging an extra fee for large-size clothes due to the fact that they may take more hand-finishing and labor time is not discrimination. If a plus-size customer brought in a regular size garment and was still charged an additional amount, THAT is discrimination.
