hope my readers have had a chance to visit the
many exhibits and shows across the country and learn some new
methods and trends in our industry. It’s a Changing
World. I hate to go back beyond more years than I care to
remember, but they tell me “laces” came after
button shoes, and who was the genius who figured out how a
“zipper” could work? The Space Age brought us easy
and serviceable “Velcro,” plus polyester along with
“permanent press” and variations in finishing and
washables.
When will we see these dramatic changes?
They are beyond the drawing boards but not ready for the
marketplace, so the progressive drycleaner should be
“surprise free” to service such new exciting
innovations when they arrive.
What better place to witness and see these
changes in action than at the recent shows, with competent
speakers to explain and introduce the miracles that will be
before us. When we consider that we spend a third of our lives
on the job, and take home another third, we need to figure out
how to manage our business by working smarter, instead of
working harder!
This brings up the terrific advantages of
attending a show. Every exhibitor and patron is at your beck
and call. They’ve got something to show and so much to
show-off! Every sales technician and employee must be at their
best, and eager and willing to shout their praises, with full
knowledge that around the comer is an equal competitor, who can
dispel a claim, match a price, a feature or benefit, guarantee
a service or color and delivery advantage. As my father would
say, “If you’re not sure of what you’re are
buying, at least be certain about who your buying from.
Imagine seeing it all in one afternoon!
What’s new?
How about tensioning equipment? Are you
ready for a labor reduction of 30 percent or more?
Today’s equipment can take totally inexperienced pressers
and make them experts in one afternoon. How? All by a simple
means of “motion study.”
We know 50 percent of our volume is pants,
and if we take one inexperienced trainee, with a new pants
tensioner, and a full legger press (one operator with two
pieces of equipment), he simply sets pants and when completed
(by timer) removes pants to legger and pivots. No more ceiling
gazing. One operator trainee is now capable of 40 to 50 pants
per hour, all perfect with no part missed and no possibility of
double creases. (Write for my booklet, “Pressed for
Perfection.”).
Where can you witness these miracles in
action and much more? At the next convenient exhibit. And
imagine, it can all be accomplished and at your leisure on a
Saturday or Sunday afternoon. See you at the next show.
Ray Colucci, a consultant to the fabric
care industry, has revised and made available three timely
pamphlets: “Up Front Is Where It Counts” for
counter training; “Pressed for Perfection” for
finishing techniques; the popular “Route to Success To
the Home of Office” for complete route training. The
pamphlets are $20 each or all three for $50. Immediate delivery
with all postage paid is promised. Send requests and payment to
to R. Colucci, 410 Warren Ave., Mamaroneck, NY 10543.
