Two opportunities to visit CO2 cleaning plants are being offered this month — one in Minnesota and another in California.
The Minnesota Cleaners Association is sponsoring a visit to the Mystic Lake Laundry facility with its CO2 cleaning
operation on Sept. 27. The tour is free and begins at 2 p.m. The facility is
located at 2680 154th St. Prior Lake, MN. Registration information and
directions are available on the MCA web site, www.minnesotadrycleaners.org.
The Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA), a technical
nonprofit organization that demonstrates new and emerging technologies, will
sponsor a showcase of CO2 cleaning at Hangers Cleaners
’ Torrey Hills plant near San Diego, CA, on Sunday, Sept. 23. The owner, Gordon
Shaw, and his employees will demonstrate the equipment and discuss spotting,
finishing and cleaning practices from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Shaw bought his first CO2 machine in 2001 after cleaning with perc for many
years. He now has two CO2 shops in the
area and two additional drop stores.
This is the second of a series of showcases sponsored by IRTA which has received
a grant from the California Air Resources Board to work with cleaners who have
converted to CO2 and water-based technologies to serve as showcase facilities
to feature these two alternatives.
IRTA will also sponsor a CO2 showcase at Royal Cleaners in Santa Monica on
Sunday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bobby Smerling, the owner, operated
perc equipment for many years before installing a CO2 machine in 2003.
IRTA also has developed case studies, which include performance and cost
information on alternatives, which will be provided at the showcases.
Next year, IRTA will hold an exhibition where cleaners can learn about carbon
dioxide and water-based cleaning technologies.
IRTA also has completed a project sponsored by Cal/EPA’s Department of Toxic Substances Control and U.S. EPA to identify, develop and
test alternative low-VOC, low toxicity POG spotting agents and has developed a
fact sheet on safer alternative spotting agents and it will be available at the
showcases.
More information on the showcases, the cleaners’ case studies, the spotting chemical fact sheet and the exhibition is available
from Katy Wolf at IRTA, (818) 244-0300 and on the IRTA web site,
www.irta.us.
